Simple Steps to Energy Efficiency

There are a number of things you can do around the house to save on energy and energy costs, we provide some useful tips to the things you can do to save energy, conserve water and save costs

When designing & fitting your home

Purchase energy-efficient appliances. Research the energy consumption of washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges and freezers before you purchase and look out for the ‘energy efficient’ labels or ratings

Draught proof your home

Gas cooking and heating is a better and cheaper alternative to carbon-rich electricity

Switch to a gas-fired tumble dryer, they are a lot less cheaper to run

Avoid open fires with your building design, they’re a costly and inefficient feature in the home

When purchasing a new hot water cylinder choose one with a low level of heat loss.

Where possible install energy efficient fluorescent light fittings and bulbs

Fit time switches for your lighting in the main thoroughfares

Consider generating your own energy from renewable energy systems such as solar panels, wind turbines and hydro power systems

What can you do immediately?

Insulate your existing hot water cylinder

Set the thermostats on all heating systems correctly to ensure optimum efficiency

Bleed radiators to release trapped air

Shower instead of bathing

Fix leaking hot water taps

Do not use hot water for small amounts when cold water would be adequate

Air dry clothes rather than tumble dry

Switch off lights when they are not needed

Turn appliances off at the wall when they are not in use as many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power even when they are switched off or are on standby mode. These include TV’s, computer monitors, DVD’s etc

Ensure rubber seals around the fridge and freezer are in good condition

Use a cold wash rather than hot wash in washing machines

Use cold water to fill the kettle

Conserve water as water companies have to use energy to supply our homes with water
